A GERMAN GOLD-MOUNTED MOTHER-OF-PEARL SNUFF-BOX
ATTRIBUTED TO WORKSHOP OF JOHANN MELCHIOR DINGLINGER (1664-1731), DRESDEN, CIRCA 1720
Oval, the cover and base set with an oval mother-of-pearl panels mounted jour, the slightly convex cover plaque applied with four gold clasps pierced and chased with Berain style scrolls, shells and a mask, the plain gold sides chased with reeding, apparently unmarked

This snuffbox has been repeatedly described as by Johann Melchior Dinglinger in numerous publications.
Johann Melchior Dinglinger (1664-1731) was born near Ulm. In 1693, he moved to Dresden where in 1696 he married the daughter of the court goldsmith, Moritz Rachel. In 1698, he himself was appointed court goldsmith by Augustus the Strong (1670-1733), for whom he worked until the end of his life. A majority of Dinglinger's works supplied to Augustus the Strong are still preserved in the Green Vaults in Dresden. The oldest, made in 1701, is the "Gold Coffee Service", a sort of large baroque especially in vermeil, enamelled and decorated with precious stones, decorated with ivory figures, enamelled gold cups, sugar bowls and a coffeepot . Yet his masterpiece remains "The Birthday Party of the Great Mughal" produced in 1702 which measures one square meter and includes some 132 figures of men and animals, including camels and elephants, under canopies set with stones precious.
