Shaped oblong, the cover chased with War Trophies and foliage in four-colour gold surrounding the initial N inset with diamonds on blue enamel ground, the sides and base chased and engraved with flowers and foliage on a matted ground, engraved on flange 'Maurice Mayer Joailler de l'Empereur .../Paris', marked on flange: 3rd standard and maker; in a contemporary associated velvet case stamped N

This presentation snuff-box was given by Napoléon III to Sir Francis Graham Moon (1796-1871).
A printer and publisher, he was elected common councilor in 1830 then Lord Mayor of London in 1854. It was in this capacity that he welcomed Napoléon III and his wife Empress Eugénie (1826-1920) at the Guildhall in 1855 who presented him with this snuff-box. Later, during a visit to Paris, Moon received the order of the Legion of Honor from the hands of the emperor.
Napoléon III was born in 1808 Charles-Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte known as Louis-Napoléon; he died in exile in England in 1873. He was the first president of the French Republic elected by universal male suffrage in 1848 and after the proclamation of the Empire in 1852, the last monarch under the name of Napoléon III until 1870.

A near identical presentation snuff-box was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 19 April 2001, lot 5.

Cette tabatière de présentation fut offerte par Napoléon III à Sir Francis Graham Moon (1796-1871).
Imprimeur et éditeur, il est élu conseiller à la Mairie de Londres en 1830 puis Maire de Londres en 1854. C’est dans cette fonction qu’il reçut Napoléon III et son épouse l’impératrice Eugénie (1826-1920) à la Guildhall en 1855, qui lui présentèrent la présente tabatière. Plus tard, lors d’une visite à Paris, Moon reçut l’ordre de la Légion d’Honneur des mains de l’empereur.

Cette tabatière est au chiffre de Napoléon III. Né Charles-Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte dit Louis-Napoléon en 1808 à Paris et mort exilé en Angleterre en 1873, il est le premier président de la République française élu au suffrage universel masculin en 1848 et après la proclamation de l’Empire en 1852 le dernier monarque sous le nom de Napoléon III jusqu’en 1870.

Une tabatière du même modèle avec quelques différences au niveau des trophées et du tortil qui encadre le monogramme a été vendue chez Sotheby’s, New York, le 19 avril 2001, lot 5.
