Oval, the cover and base boldly chased with a basket of flowers in four-colour gold on a sable ground, within a lobed oval reserve surrounded by a lobed burnished gold band and a bright-cut edged gold ribbon interspersed with flowers in vari-colour gold, within a laurel border divided by four scroll clusters, the sides engraved with a diaper pattern and set with baskets of flowers suspended from white gold knotted ribbons on a matted ground in lobed reserves alternating with floral rosettes in identical reserves, marked in cover and base: town, date-letter (R), gold standard and maker

Johann Friederich Büttner entered his mark in 1746 and died in 1778.
His boxes are all finely chased in three or four-colour gold and depicts rich scenes. For this box with this large bouquet of flowers standing in a basket, Büttner seems to have taken inspiration from 17^thcentury Flemish or Dutch paintings.

Lot Essay

Johann Friederich Büttner insculpte son poinçon en 1746 et décède en 1778.
Ses boîtes d’une grande qualité de ciselure sont généralement en or de trois ou quatre couleurs, avec des compositions originales. En l’occurrence pour cette tabatière, avec ce grand bouquet de fleurs dans une corbeille, Büttner semble copier un tableau hollandais ou flamand du XVIIe siècle.
