A LOUIS XV ENAMELLED AND GOLD-MOUNTED HARDSTONE SNUFF-BOX
PARIS, 1736-1737, MAKER'S MARK PARTLY LEGIBLE C?H
Cartouche shaped, the lapis lazuli panels set in gold cagework, the cover and base rims enamelled en plein with trailing flowers, carnations, roses, lillies and tulips on matted ground, in later case stamped D.S. Lavender, marked inside the base's rim: date-letter (v) and maker; on flange: decharge

Since the 4th century BC, lapis lazuli has been one of the most coveted and revered stones and therefore the object of intense international trade. Prized for its rare color, it has been used since the time of the archaic Sumerian dynasties and spread at the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC in the Middle East and particularly in Egypt.
In Europe, it became coveted from the 16th century where it was turned into decorative objects mounted in gold and collected by Europeans monarchs such as the Medici or Louis XIV.
Lapis lazuli was without doubt the most expensive hardstone, with one ounce of lapis costing one ounce of gold, making this snuff-box an invaluable and most precious object.
