Le lapis-lazuli est depuis le IVe siècle avant JC l’une des pierres les plus convoitées et les plus vénérées, et donc l'objet d'un intense commerce international. Prisé pour sa couleur rare, il est utilisé depuis l’époque des dynasties archaïques sumériennes et se répand au début du IIIe millénaire avant notre ère dans le Moyen-Orient et en particulier en Égypte. En Europe, c’est véritablement à partir du XVIe siècle qu’il connaît un remarquable essor où il est taillé en objets décoratifs montés en or collectionnés par les souverains tels que les Médicis ou Louis XIV. Le lapis-lazuli est donc sans doute la pierre dure la plus coûteuse si l’on considère que pendant longtemps une once de lapis-lazuli coûtait une once d’or, faisant de cette tabatière un objet de très grande valeur dès l’époque de sa fabrication.

Marks legible to worn (slightly distorted). Two flowers and eight green leaves on underside re-enamelled. Very light abrasion marks to underside. One of the side panel has been restored and lacquered: slightly shinier finish; the restoration only showing under UV light. Some natural imperfections in the lapis lazuli. The lapis lazuli is vivid although possibly less bright under normal light than on the website. Light staining to velvet lining of the later case.
