François Tiron (1680-1734) is the second generation of an important dynasty of goldsmiths. The son of jean Tiron (before 1654-1712), « maître fondeur en sable or et argent » (gold and silver caster). He entered his mark in 1757 sponsored by Jean de Villeclerc.
Gold boxes by this maker are extremely rare probably because gold boxes dating from before 1740 are rare due not only to the aftermath of Louis XIV Sumptuary Laws but also the melting downs and the change in taste.This snuff-box is typical in shape and design of boxes of this early period, flat, cartouche shaped and all in gold.

François Tiron (1680-1734) est issu d’une dynastie d’orfèvres, le fils de Jean Tiron (av. 1654-1712), « maître fondeur en sable, or et argent ». Il est reçu maître en 1707, demeurant rue Sainte-Anne, et insculpe son poinçon, cautionné par Jean de Villeclerc.
Les tabatières par cet orfèvre sont rares, probablement parce qu'elles ont été victimes des changements de mode et fontes, courantes jusqu'au XIXe siècle. Cette tabatière est typique des créations de l'époque, c’est à dire toute en or pour les plus importantes et de forme cartouche plate.
