A CONTINENTAL ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A HARDSTONE CAMEO

Oval, the cover centred with a gold-mounted agate cameo depicting Luna, the goddess of the moon, in profile, surrounded by a green enamelled leaf border and a paterae pattern of radiating tapering enamelled plaques imitating bloodstone with translucent orange enamelled demi-lunes, the base similarly enamelled and centred by a gold star in taille d'épargne on a translucent blue guilloché ground, the sides with matching vertical stripes, all framed by a Neuber-style cloisonné vari-colour enamelled band of white flowerheads, green leaves and black wavy ribbons, on a translucent blue enamelled engine-turned gold ground, in a later leather case stamped BULGARI, ROMA


This snuffbox is similar in its decoration to the work of Johann Christian Neuber, the Dresden goldsmith known for his hard stone snuffboxes and the inventor of the cloisonné mosaic. However, here the decoration is made of enamel, proving the persistence of its style. The quality of production as well as the color palette suggests a German or Austrian attribution.
