A GERMAN JEWELLED GOLD-MOUNTED HARDSTONE SNUFF-BOX
PROBABLY WORKSHOP OF FRIEDRICH LUDWIG HOFFMANN, BERLIN, CIRCA 1760
Oval, of translucent calcedony applied with a ribboned bouquet of flowers surrounded by flying insects including butterflies, ladybugs, fly, scarab in hardstones and precious stones (agate, jasper, calcedony, lapis-lazuli, turquoise, malachite, amethyst, sapphires, rubies and diamonds), the gold mount chased with two-colour gold flowers on basketweave pattern ground, apparently unmarked

The technique of applying insects, flowers and other symbolic motifs to hardstone boxes is generally attributed to the workshop of Friedrich Ludwig Hoffmann and Friedrich Hoffmann son, active in Berlin at the end of the 18th century. It is part of the tradition of relief decoration on hardstone, known as reliefmosaik, begun at the court of Frederick the Great in Berlin thanks to the rich mineral deposits of Saxony. This technique will then be adopted in other centers, proving the popularity of these highly decorative and symbolic hardstone boxes.

Similar boxes can be found in public collections including a similarly decorated gold-mounted quartz snuff-box, signed "F. L. Hoffmann", in the Gilbert collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, (inventory number GILBERT.416-2008), illustrated in Charles Truman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes, Los Angeles, 1991, p. 192, pl. 66.
The Louvre collection holds an oval snuff-box in cloudy quartz also inlaid, (inventory number OA 2145, cf. OA 2145) see S. Grandjean, Catalog of snuffboxes, boxes and cases from the 18th and 19th centuries from the Louvre Museum , Paris, 1981, p. 291, pl. 442. Another oval cloudy quartz snuff-box, applied with flies and ladybugs, is in a private collection in Berlin, see S. Bursche, Galanterien: Dosen, Etuis und Miniaturen aus Gold, Edelsteinen, Email und Porzellan. Eine Berliner Privatsammlung, Berlin, 1996, p. 92, no. 35.

Lot Essay

La technique d'applications d'insectes, fleurs et autres motifs tous très symboliques sur des boîtes en pierres dures est généralement attribuée à l'atelier de Friedrich Ludwig Hoffmann et Friedrich Hoffmann fils, actifs à Berlin à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Elle s'inscrit dans la tradition de la décoration en relief sur pierre dure, reliefmosaik, commencée à la cour de Frédéric le Grand à Berlin grâce aux riches gisements de minéraux de la Saxe. Cette technique sera ensuite reprise dans différents centres de production prouvant la popularité de ces boîtes en pierres dures porteuses de messages symboliques.

Plusieurs tabatières de ce type se trouvent dans les collections publiques dont une en quartz montée sur or et décorée de façon similaire, signée "F. L. Hoffmann" dans la collection Gilbert au Victoria and Albert Museum, Londres, (numéro d'inventaire GILBERT.416-2008), voir Charles Truman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes, Los Angeles, 1991, p. 192, pl. 66.
