By family tradition and according to a handwritten note, this snuff-box belonged to Jean-Jacques de Cambacérès (1753-1824) Duke of Parma. Born in s family of magistrates from Montpellier, he began his career as a lawyer and advisor to the Languedoc chamber of accounts, and entered politics at the start of the French Revolution. A specialist in legal issues, he was instrumental in the drafting of the Civil Code and played a central role in the establishment of the institutions and laws during the Napoleonic era.

Par tradition familiale et d'après une note manuscrite, cette tabatière aurait appartenue à Jean-Jacques de Cambacérès (1753-1824) duc de Parme. Issu d'une famille de magistrats de Montpellier, il commence sa carrière comme avocat et conseiller à la chambre des comptes du Languedoc, et entre en politique au début de la Revolution française. Spécialiste des questions juridiques, il est l'un des rédacteurs du Code Civil et est associé à la genèse de toutes les grandes institutions et lois de l'Empire.
