AN ITALIAN GOLD-MOUNTED PIETRA-DURA SNUFF-BOX
PROBABLY FLORENCE, OPFICIO DELLE PIETRE DURE, CIRCA 1810-1820
Rectangular, the sides and base in lapis-lazuli, the cover inlaid with a white marble panel encrusted with a pietra-dura mosaic depicting a basket of flowers in lapis-lazuli, agate and malachite, within a border of agate and lapis-lazuli forming a ribbon-twist pattern, the gold mounts engraved with ribboned foliage, marked on flange with French control mark 1809-1819

The motifs of this box can be attributed to Carlo Carlieri, active at the Opificio from 1802 to 1819. This style became in fashion with the return of neoclassical compositions in Florentine pietre dure following archaeological discoveries, and was introduced in the Opificio by the painter Antonio Cioci (1722-1792). These compositions were taken up by his successor, Carlo Carlieri (1781-1822) and became very popular during the Napoleonic era.
This snuffbox is similar to the one sold at Sotheby's, London, June 7, 2007, lot 96. For comparisons, see Anna Maria Giusti, Il Museo dell'Opificio delle Pietre Dure a Firenze, 1978, vol. I, figs. 469-478; flight. II, p. 84 and Charles Truman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes, vol. I, 1991, p. 4.
