A SWISS GOLD VINAIGRETTE SET WITH A ROMAN MICROMOSAIC
GENEVA, CIRCA 1815, THE MICROMOSAIC, ROME, 1810-1815
Shuttle shaped, the base chased with scalework centred by peacock feathering, the cover centred by a micromosaic figuring a spaniel lying on a bed of grass, on sablé ground, the grille pierced with a pattern of interwoven circles, apparently unmarked

The dog is a popular subject with micromosaicists, probably at the request of customers, particularly English vistors on their Italian Grand Tour. This version of the spaniel was used repeativly by all micromosaic artists and another version of this spaniel is illustrated in J. Hanisee Gabriel, The Gilbert Collection Micromosaics, London, 2000, p. 75, No 23. This one is by Antonio Aguatti, one of the most talented manufacturers of micromosaics, known for the finesse of his work and the richness of his palette.
For another vinaigrette decorated with a similar micromosaic see lot 69.
