Donna Summer won three awards at the 8th American Music Awards ceremony, held on 18 January 1980 with hosts Elton John, Toni Tennille and Natalie Cole. The Favorite Pop/Rock Single award, presented by Bernadette Peters and Charlie Daniels, honored Summer's 'Bad Girls', which charted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks in the summer of 1979, achieved the #2 slot on Billboard's 1979 Year-End singles chart and received Platinum certification from the RIAA. In her acceptance speech, Summer thanked engineer Steven D. Smith, who encouraged her to record the song. Summer’s original award trophy had been severely damaged sometime in the early 1990s during a move. The present statue was manufactured by Society Awards, current supplier of trophies to the AMAs.
