Torse est le deuxième de deux corps abstraits considérés par Arp comme ses premières œuvres dans le rond; l’autre sculpture, également intitulée Torse, a été conçue en 1930. Auparavant habitué des reliefs et autres compositions de formes biomorphiques principalement frontales, c’est dans sa première exploration artistique du corps humain qu’il peut pleinement exprimer l’analogie des formes humaines et végétales qui inspirera largement son œuvre ultérieure. Se remémorant la révélation créative à l’origine de ces œuvres majeures, Arp explique : «Pendant de nombreuses années, de fin 1919 à 1931 environ, j’ai interprété la plupart de mes œuvres. L’interprétation était souvent plus importante pour moi que l'œuvre elle-même. Puis mon besoin d’interprétation a soudainement disparu, et le corps, la forme, l'œuvre perfectionnée à l’extrême sont devenus essentiels. En 1930, je suis revenu à l’activité que les Allemands ont appelée de manière si éloquente Hauerei (taille). Je me suis livré à la sculpture et j’ai modelé du plâtre. Mes premières productions étaient deux torses» (cité in E. Schweidegger, Zweiklang, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Hans Arp, Zurich, 1960, p. 176).

La composition de la présente œuvre parvient à transmettre une forte impression de mouvement par sa posture active, ouverte et arquée. Le caractère dansant de cette pose est renforcé par le lien du corps à sa base, qu’il touche en un point unique et asymétrique. Selon l’angle de vue, le torse semble s’étirer, voire sauter dans les airs; ses formes biomorphiques délicatement arrondies semblent se projeter vers l’extérieur, reflétant la fascination d’Arp pour la croissance et la transformation biologiques. Bien qu’elle soit identifiée comme un torse humain, cette figurine souligne la convergence d’éléments humains et naturels, la métamorphose voire l’évolution d’une entité vivante en quelque chose de nouveau. Si elles rappellent les courbes des hanches, des seins, du ventre ou des fesses, ces formes naissantes ressemblent vaguement à des traits humains: en observant la sculpture pour la première fois, il peut être difficile de distinguer l’avant de l’arrière. Il semble qu’Arp ait voulu que certains traits s’apparentent à d’autres, jouant délibérément sur l’ambiguïté. Cependant, en l’observant de plus près, l’orientation de la silhouette apparaît clairement: elle est penchée vers l’avant, centrée sur un espace vide formé par une concavité dans la demi-section du torse. Il n’en reste pas moins que l’ondulation des formes abstraites exprime une sensualité résolument féminine. Margherita Andreotti, qui a étudié l’importance de la forme féminine dans l’expérimentation sculpturale d’Arp, indique: « Malgré leur extrême simplification, la plupart des torses d’Arp ont des connotations incontestablement féminines. D’une part, cela montre leur relation avec les nombreux nus féminins dessinés par Arp bien avant sa découverte des formes biomorphiques vers 1916, et d’autre part, cela suggère que l’artiste a adhéré à la notion traditionnelle selon laquelle la beauté sensuelle trouve sa meilleure expression dans le corps féminin, dont les courbes sont particulièrement bien adaptées au vocabulaire curvilinéaire d’Arp. En préférant la forme féminine, Arp peut également refléter le symbolisme ancestral assimilant la femme et la nature, qui apparaît implicitement dans sa célèbre déclaration: « L’art est un fruit qui grandit dans l’homme comme un fruit sur une plante ou un enfant dans le ventre de sa mère» (ibid., p. 181).

Torse is the second of two abstracted bodies that Arp identified as his first works in the round; the other is also titled Torse, which he created in 1930. Having previously created reliefs and other primarily frontal compositions of biomorphic forms, it was in his artistic exploration of the human body that he was able to give full expression to the analogy of human and vegetal forms that was the inspiration for much of his subsequent oeuvre. Recalling the creative epiphany that led to these important works, Arp commented: "For many years, roughly from the end of 1919 to 1931, I interpreted most of my works. Often the interpretation was more important for me than the work itself. Suddenly my need for interpretation vanished, and the body, the form, the supremely perfected work became everything to me. In 1930 I went back to the activity which the Germans so eloquently call Hauerei (hewing). I engaged in sculpture and modeled in plaster. The first products were two torsos" (quoted in E. Schweidegger, Zweiklang, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Hans Arp, Zurich, 1960, p. 176).

In the present composition the arched back and open, active stance of the present figure convey a powerful sense of movement. The dance-like quality of this pose is further emphasized by the body's relationship to its base, which it touches at a single, asymmetrical point. Depending on the viewing angle, the torso appears to be stretching or even leaping into the air; its smoothly rounded biomorphic forms seem to push outwards, reflecting Arp's fascination with representing biological growth and transformation. Although identified as a human torso, the figurine also marks a convergence of human and natural elements, a metamorphosis or even evolution of one living entity into something new. Although reminiscent of the curve of a hip, breast, stomach or buttocks, these budding forms are analogous to human features in a vaguely generalized way; when first approaching the sculpture it may be difficult to ascertain the front from the back. Arp appears to have intended certain features to resemble others, creating a playfully ambiguous effect. Upon closer study, however, the orientation of the figure becomes apparent: it leans forward, centered on a negative space formed by a concavity in the mid-section of the torso. Nonetheless, the undulating abstracted forms express a sensuality that is distinctly female. Margherita Andreotti has addressed the importance of the female form for Arp's sculptural experimentation, stating:
"Despite their high degree of simplification, most of Arp's recurring torsos have recognizably feminine connotations. This indicates, on the one hand, their descent from the many female nudes Arp had drawn well before his discovery around 1916 of biomorphic forms, and, on the other, it suggests that Arp adhered to the traditional notion that sensual beauty is best expressed by the female body, whose curvaceous forms must have seemed particularly well suited to Arp's curvilinear vocabulary. In his preference for the feminine form, Arp may also have been reflecting the age-old symbolism equating woman with nature, which was implicit in his well-known statement, ‘ Art is a fruit that grows in man like a fruit on a plant or a child in its mother's womb’ "(quoted in ibid., p. 181).
