A Gloss on the Psalms
Fragment of a Gloss on the Psalms in Latin, manuscript on vellum [Italy, 9th century]
A fine example of 9th-century Caroline minuscule from what was possibly a Gloss on the Psalms.

c.200 × 37mm. A vertical strip of 29 visible lines, blind-ruled, written in a very small and fine Caroline minuscule in brown ink, slightly inclined to the right, especially on the minims of 'm' and 'n'; 'a' appears both with and without an ascender (a few stains, remnants of green adhesive).

Provenance:
Colker MS 285; acquired in 1979 from B.M. Rosenthal.

From the column of single, partial words, it is difficult to identify the text. A few indications (beyond the receipt, which says this strip is related to 'Psalm 48 from a Gallican Psalter, 9th c', and Colker's one-line description, which called it a 'Gloss on the Psalms') are the words 'caelum voc[abit]' on l.19; possibly a reference to Psalm 50 (Vul. 49) 'Advocabit caelum desursum', and the sequence 'celum voc[..] virtutes [...] apostolos [...] angelico' which do appear in Ps.Bede's Exegesis on the Psalms (Migne, PL, XCIII, esp. cols. 733-754).
