A high-grade French Psalter
Leaf from a Psalter in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum [Northern France, mid 13th century].
A nearly-pristine leaf from a very high-grade Psalter.
c. 165 × 125mm. 18 lines written in a high-grade gothic script, the text comprising Psalms 34:21–35:13, the beginning of Psalm 35 with an illuminated initial inhabited by a lion, each verse initial in gold and colours (minor marginal stain, vestiges of adhesive tape in the margin on the verso, overall in fine condition)

Provenance:
Colker MS 243; acquired in 1974 from a bookstall along the Seine.

The script is very high grade, and only the most deluxe Psalters use gold and colours for their many thousands of verse initials, in addition to inhabited Psalm initials.
