This large format thangka of Amitabha, the Buddha of Boundless Light, depicts the Buddha seated at center on a lotus throne, holding begging bowl filled with the nectar of immortality. He is surrounded by various retinue figures in a lush and verdant landscape. Paintings on gold ground are often used for images of the Buddha who is said to “shine like a mountain of gold.”
