Lot Essay

Abstract painter and graphic artist José Villalobos hails from Oaxaca, Mexico. He studied architecture in the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and by the early 1980s Villalobos had been included in numerous individual and group shows both in Mexico and internationally in such cities as Havana, Madrid, Paris, Hamburg, Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. His large abstract canvases are richly textured and influenced by the timeless landscape of Oaxaca as well as its abundant rock formations found in the earth of a place steeped in ancient spiritual traditions.
