The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting presents very well in natural light, with the modeling of the figures, depth of colour and the detailing of the drapery well preserved. The canvas has been relined; it is held under tension and remains stable. In natural light, three lines of tenting can be seen in the paint surface, one of approximately 20 cm. to the left of the sitter's head, one of approximately 40 cm. to the left of the sitter's shoulder, and on of approximately 30 cm. to the ermine at lower left. These would benefit from stabilisatiton. Examination under UV light reveals retouching to the flesh tones of the sitter's décolletage, with some very minor scattered retouching to the sitter's face, hand and the head of the page. There are two small repaired irregular tears in the bottom right hand corner. There is some further minor scattered retouching to the drapery. The paint remains stable.
