The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to quite a strict reline; it is held under tension and remains stable. There has been some thinning and flattening to the upper paint layers as a result of the relining process. The painting presents well in natural light, with the passages of light and shadow retaining their definition and sense of depth. There is a fine pattern of craquelure across the paint surface. The paint remains stable. The varnish carries some dirt. Examination under ultra-violet light reveals extensive retouching to the sky. There is some further scattered retouhing. The varnish layer is uneven, having been partially cleaned at some prior point.
