The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is unlined; it is held under tension and remains stable. The picture presents very well in natura light, with the precision of the composition and the crispness of the colours fully appreciable. The canvas join can be seen running horizontally across the centre of the painting. There has been some thinning to the upper paint glazes, especially in the darker tones to the lower right-hand corner. There is a fine pattern of craquelure across the paint surface. The paint remains stable. Examination under ultra-violet light reveals some minor scattered retouching and some slight strengthening to the outlines of the drapery. There is a cloudy varnsh that precludes further examination.
