This is a version of Watteau's Marriage Contract and Country Dance of circa 1711 in the Prado, Madrid (P002353). Another, slightly different version of the composition is held in the Soane Museum, London. The latter was engraved in circa 1735 by Nicolas de Larmessin. A number of copies after the Soane version exist; versions following the Prado composition are less common.

The canvas is unlined; it is held under tension and remains stable. The painting presents well in natural light, the illustrative strokes of the black paint used to delineate the figures are fully appreciable. In natural light a vertical line of retouching can be seen above the central figural group and a horzontal line can be seen to the centre of the canvas approximately 10 cm. from the top edge. There is a fine pattern of craquelure, and there is some slight lifting to the paint in the upper left-hand corner. Examination under ultra-violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals some very minor scattered retouching to the yellow tones at lower left. Otherwise the painting appears to be relatively untouched. There is a slightly cloudy varnish.
