The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

This painting remains in a very good condition with the subtleties of colour and the graceful modelling well preserved. The overall appearance is harmonious, with an even surface gloss.
The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. It is possible that the corners were made up in the 19th century, further technical research would be necessary to determine this. There is evidence in natural light of retouching to each of the four corners, and the stretcher has also been made up at the corners.
Examination under UV light is slightly impaired by an uneven varnish. The aforementioned retouching to the corners is confirmed. There appears to have been some retouching in the sky above the main figural group. The paint remains stable.
