The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. The painting presents very well in natural light, with the crispness of execution and colours of the upper paint glazes fully appreciable. There is a fine pattern of craquelure across the paint surface, with some areas more pronounced, notably to the right of the sitter's head. Te paint remains stable. There is some slight frame abrasion to the canvas edges. Examination under ultra-violet light reveals extensive retouching to the background, most notably to the right of the sitter. There is further scattered retouching. There is an uneven varnish that precludes further commentary.
