A LOUIS XVI-STYLE ORMOLU-MOUNTED MAHOGANY LARGE COMMODE
LATE 19TH CENTURY, AFTER A MODEL BY JEAN-HENRI RIESENER
The present commode is a copy of the celebrated pair supplied by Jean-Henri Riesener (maître in 1768; d. 1806) in 1786 for the Salon des Nobles de la Reine at Versailles. Furnished until 1785 with Louis XIV's original decor, the room was completely refurbished by Marie-Antoinette, the painted ceiling by Michel Corneille being the only original decoration to remain. The marble walls were replaced with gilt dado panels hung with apple-green silk, whilst the marquetry commodes were substituted with the two by Riesener, together with a pair of matching encoignures.
The commode offered here differs slightly from the Riesener original as it has doors instead of drawers. A near pair with drawers were sold Christie's, London, 1 October 2002, lot 276 (£45,410) and a single sold Christie's, London, 17 March 2011, lot 86.

This large scale commode is structurally stable and in good decorative order. The marble with some softening to the moulding and small chips to the edges, and light surface scratches as to be expected from use. There are marks, dents and abrasions overall as to be expected with age and use, particularly to the lower banded edge. Minute shrinkage to the veneers, seen on the curved side panels..There is a loss to the moulding on the back left corner above the foot and a loss to the front of the front right leg, although this is disguised somewhat by the mount. The mounts secure but the frieze mounts in particular are quite rubbed from cleaning resulting in losses to the gilding.
