Lot Essay

The name for the present vase and its string of figures derive from the Ancient Greek palaestrae, sites where ancient Greek athletes, typically nude, would study wrestling and boxing. The model is recorded with various configurations of bands at its shoulder and neck, implying that multiple molds were used throughout its production. An example from the Steven A. Greenberg Collection with two bands at its shoulder, akin to the present lot, was sold by Christie's, New York, 13 December 2012, lot 35.
