Tanabe Shochiku III comes from a long line of bamboo artists and was the son of Tanabe Chikuunsai III (1940–2014). He studied at the Osaka City Crafts High School, going on to obtain a degree in sculpture from Tokyo University of the Arts. Following the death of his father in 2014, Shochiku III adopted the artist’s name of Chikuunsai IV in 2017. He has carried on his family’s tradition but also experiments with combining lacquer (urushi) and bamboo, as in the present Lot where he collaborated with lacquer artist Wakamiya Takashi.
