Par leurs guirlandes et trophées militaires finement ciselés, ce bureau plat et cartonnier s'inspirent d'une série de tables produites par l'un des plus célèbres ébénistes du XVIIIe siècle, Jean-François Oeben. L'une d'elles, attribuée à son atelier, se trouve d'ailleurs dans la collection Dodge du Detroit Institute of Arts (71.208). Cette table a probablement été conçue pour un commanditaire au statut militaire important au XVIIIe siècle. Elle est de forme similaire au nôtre et ses montants sont appliqués de bronzes presque identiques (A. Darr et al., The Dodge Collection of Eighteenth-Century French and English Art in The Detroit Institute of Arts, New York, 1996, pp. 41-44). Un certain nombre de plateaux de bureaux d'Oeben présentent aux angles des bronzes comparables, dont l'un associé à un cartonnier, illustré dans F. Buckland, `A Group of Bureaux Plats and the Royal Inventories', The Journal of The Furniture History Society, vol. VIII, 1972, pl. 37. Datant du milieu du XIXe siècle, ce bureau et son cartonnier illustrent l'éclectisme de la création de mobilier sous le Second Empire, imitant et réinterprétant les modèles d'Ancien Régime.

The website illustrations are accurate. There are the inevitable dents, marks, scratches and shrinkage cracks consistent with age and use. The veneer is partly insolated, with little lighter stains throughout. There are some restorations to the veneer, especially to the back sides, with painted stripes and horizontal cracks. There are large horizontal cracks to the left and the right sides, with some minor cracks throughout. There are some losses to the veneer, especially to the right side of the cartonnier. There are some minor marks and scratches to the leather top, as expected.
