Goderfoy Dester (mort le 24 décembre 1805) est un menuisier et ébéniste. Reçu maître en 1774, il installe son atelier rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine et connu une grande notoriété. Son mobilier, principalement de style Transition et Louis XVI, est sobre, finement marqueté et réhaussé de bronzes. Cette commode d'époque Transition est à rapprocher d'une commode estampillée de l'ébéniste et illustrée dans l'ouvrage de Jean de Nicolay (op. cit.) dont la forme générale, l'ensemble des marqueteries, les bronzes sont identiques. Seuls le marbre, la taille et les chutes en bronze des pieds différent. Un autre exemplaire similaire provenant de la collection de Mme Anna Thomson Dodge est passé en vente chez Christie's à Londres, le 24 juin 1971, lot 113.

Good overall condition. The illustrations published on the website catalogue are accurate. There are inevitable dents, marks, scratches and rubbing due to age and use. Marble : as stated in the catalogue the marble top is associated. There are inevitable chips especially to the edges and scratches as expected. Gilding: with some signs of tarnishing and rubbings. With some traces of dust and oxidation. Veneer : some minor wood elements have been replaced or re-fixed. With some shrinkage cracks and some liftings to the veneer, especially to the lateral panels and the backs of the feet. There are some restorations to the veneer. The veneer is slightly sun-faded.
