A LARGE GERMAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER BEAKER AND COVER
MARK OF ADOLF GAAP, AUGSBURG,
1684-1689
On three ball feet, the slightly tapering body chased with three medallions centred by an emperor's profile with name engraved above NERO/CLAUD - VITE/LIUS - TRAI/ANUS, and interspersed with military trophies, the conforming cover chased with profils of TIBE/RIUS - VES/PAS- CLO/DIUS and with ball finial, marked underneath and in cover: town and maker

Adolf Gaap seems to have specialised in cups and covers decorated with profiles of emperors. Three similar examples, each on bold ball feet like the present example are illustrated in H. Seling, Die Kunst der Augsburger Goldschmiede 1529-1868, Munich, 1980, vol.II, pl. 389, 390 and 391.
