On spreading foot, the plain cylindrical body applied with coins comprising Orts and Thalers of Sigismund III, King of Poland (1566-1632), the cover centred with a Thaler known as the Thaler of “the three brothers” dated 1593 featuring the Electors of Saxony Christian II (1591-1611), John George I (Hans Georg I) (1591-1656) and Augustus (August) (1591-1615), marked on foot-rim and cover-rim: town, date-letter (R), maker and assay

In 1261, the city of Königsberg, capital of Prussia, introduced a mint that minted coins for the Deutschen Orden (Teutonic Order), the Duchy of Prussia and the Kingdom of Prussia. Minting was suspended from 1309 and resumed in 1456.This long tradition of coinage has made coins a typical decorative motif in Königsberg's silver. As a result, coin-decorated tankards, beakers and goblets became very fashionable in Prussia in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and were of the highest quality.
Scheffler mentions in op. cit. p. 111 a Munzhümpen by Johann Schwartz in a private collection in Grenzbach.

Lot Essay

La ville de Königsberg introduisit en 1261 un Hôtel des Monnaies qui frappait les pièces pour le ( l’Ordre Teutonique), le Duché de Prusse et le Royaume de Prusse. L’activité monnétaire fut suspendue de 1309 pour reprendre en 1456.
Cette longue tradition monnétaire a fait des pièces de monnaie un motif de décoration typique dans l’orfévrerie de Königsberg. Ainsi les tankards, timbales ou gobelets décorés de pièces sont-ils devenus très à la mode en Prusse au cours du XVIIe et du XVIIIe siècles et toujours d’une très grande qualité.

Scheffler mentionne dans op. cit. p.111 un par Johann Schwartz conservé dans une collection privée à Grenzbach.
