Nous connaissons un petit nombre de serre-bijoux de ce format élaboré durant les années de transition entre les styles Louis XV et Louis XVI. Probablement commandés à l'initiative des marchands merciers Simon-Philippe Poirier et Lazare Duvaux, quelques grands ébénistes comme B.V.R.B., R.V.L.C., Simon Oeben, ou encore Pierre Roussel ont estampillé ce type de meubles composé d'un coffret à abattant ou à rideau reposant sur une table à pieds cambrés. Notre exemplaire est quasiment identique à un autre serre-bijoux estampillé de Pierre Roussel et conservé au Cleveland Museum of Arts. Le troisième examplaire connu estampillé de l'ébéniste est passé en vente chez Christie's à Londres le 12 décembre 2002, lot 45. Ce dernier varie par une ornementation des bronzes légèrement différente en partie supérieure. Les trois exemplaires sont ornés de bronzes à tête d'homme barbu qui sont caractéristiques de l'atelier d'Oeben. Selon François Quéré (op.cit.), ils correspondraient à des surmoulages contemporains répondant à la demande des marchands-merciers pour leurs clients commanditaires.

Good overall condition The illustrations published on the website catalogue are accurate. There are the inevitable minor dents, marks, scratches, shrinkage cracks and rubbing due to age and use. Veneer : There are some minor scratches as expected, especially to the edges of the front feet. There are some minor losses and liftings tot the veneer, especially to the front door and the marquetery panels. There are some shrinkage cracks and restorations, especially to the upper tray and the panels. The veneer has been restored, in particular to the top of the feet, and is slightly sun faded throughout. The drawers have been reinforced. Gilding : there are some very very minor signs of tarnishing, black spot and stains, especially to the pierced frieze. The bronze elements are later and re-gilded. One bronze element on the right side is partially detached and need to be re-fixed properly.
