A GERMAN GOLD SNUFF-BOX
BY DANIEL MARCHAND AND COMPAGNON, HANAU, CIRCA 1770
Oval, the cover, sides and base chased with musical trophies and scrolling flowers and foliage of polished gold, marked in cover and base: maker and scratched mark 14K; on flange: twice later French control mark (owl)

Daniel Marchand (1733-1794), native of Hanau was one of the most important bijoutiers in Hanau after his brothers-in-law the Frères Toussaint. He was also named in the agreement signed with the engine-turner Etienne Flamant in 1773 and contracted to supply 70 boxes a year to Flamant for turning. Marchand went bankrupt before 1790.
