Ovale, émaillée en gris souris sur fond guilloché de filets horizontaux ondulants et bordé d’une fine bande émaillée rose opaque, le couvercle centré d’un médaillon en émail figurant 'Louis XV conduit par Minerve au Temple de l'Immortalité' d’après Antoine Coypel (vers 1707-1722) dans un cadre en or fileté entouré d’une frise de laurier enrubannée, les bords ciselés en relief à l’identique, les panneaux latéraux flanqués par des bustes de jeunes hommes dans des cadres perlés, poinçons dans le couvercle et le fond : orfèvre FS sous couronne, soleil et lettre K à l’imitation des poinçons parisiens de 1768-1774 ; sur la gorge : poinçon de contrôle pour Hanau pour l’or à 18 carats, contrôle français postérieur, gravé à la pointe sur la gorge A.R 1795

A GERMAN ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX
BY LES FRÈRES SOUCHAY, HANAU, CIRCA 1780-1785
Oval, decorated with panels of translucent grey over undulating horizontal reeds within a band in opaque pale pink, the rim chased in relief with ribbon-tied laurel wreath, the cover set in centre with an enamel plaque depicting Minerva guiding Louis XV after Antoine Coypel (1661-1722) within laurel frame, the sides panels interspersed with young man bust in profile within beaded frame, engraved on flange with A.R. 1795, marked in cover and base with maker's mark FS underneath a coronet, a sun and letter K; on flange with Hanau bird's head mark for 18 carats gold, later French import marks


The miniature set on the cover of the box depicts 'Minerva guiding Louis XV to the Temple of Glory' or 'Minerva taking care of Louis XV's education'. It is after a painting by Antoine Coypel (1661-1722), known through an engraving by Pierre Drevet (1633-1738). Coypel's painting was once displayed in the 'Salle d’assemblée de l’Académie royale des Belles-Lettres' at the Louvre, as illustrated in a 1773 drawing by Gabriel de Saint-Aubin (1724-1780) kept in the library of the Institut de France, which shows the interior of the hall with the painting on the western wall.
This scene, in which the goddess takes care of the education of the young Louis XV, is a classical allegorical symbol used to glorify the monarchy and emphasize the ideal qualities the young king was meant to embody. Minerva symbolises wisdom, protection, and strategy; represented next to the king as a child, she suggests that he is guided by a divine ideal and protected by a powerful divine figure. The allegory highlights the king as a guarantor of wisdom and order, reinforcing the sacred image of absolute monarchy. This representation was part of the propaganda of the Old Regime, and its use in the 1780s, a few years after Louis XVI came to power, to emphasize the continuity of the monarchy.
The use of such an image on a German snuff-box demonstrates its symbolic power and international dimension.


The choice of this image to adorn a snuff-box also suggests that it was intended for a coming of age of a young man. Since Minerva is also associated with education and intelligence, depicting her as the guide of the young Louis XV highlights the values of a royal education. This suggestion is reinforced by the presence on the sides of medallion depicting a young man's profile. These decorative element give the object a symbolic meaning for its recipient: like the young king, the young boy enters adulthood with an education inspired by the highest intellectual and moral virtues.

Hanau became an important center for luxury goods production thanks to the privileges and financial incentives offered by Prince Regent William (1682–1760), later Landgrave William VIII (1730–1760), to anyone willing to establish a business there. The brothers Esay (1723–1791) and Marc-André Souchay (1730–1811), from a Huguenot family of bijoutiers in Hanau, opened their workshop in the 1770s, joining the more than 30 bijoutiers involved in the production of gold boxes in the city.
The importance of the trade is attest by the contract signed in the early 1770s by Étienne Flamant, a guillocheur from Geneva, with Hanau’s leading goldsmiths for the supply of approximately 385 to 430 gold boxes per year for decoration. Les Frères Souchay committed to delivering 120 boxes, highlighting the scale of gold box production in Hanau at that time. After Esay’s departure in 1788, his brother Marc-André continued the business. Their boxes followed the stylistic tradition of Hanau snuffboxes, crafted by goldsmith-bijoutiers such as Les Frères Toussaint, distinguished by their exceptional engraving and enameling quality.
