Louis-Philippe I (1773–1850) was proclaimed King of France in 1830 after the forced abdication of his cousin Charles X, following the events of the July Revolution. His government, known as the July Monarchy, was dominated by members of the wealthy French elite as well as many former high-ranking Napoleonic officials. However, his popularity declined as economic conditions deteriorated in 1847, and he was forced to abdicate after the outbreak of the French Revolution of 1848. He then went into exile in Great Britain, where he remained until his death.
Louis-Philippe was a fervent admirer of Alexandre-Raoul Morel, son of the renowned goldsmith Gabriel-Raoul Morel. The king encouraged him to present his work at the 1834 Exposition des Produits de l’Industrie Française. He thus commissioned Morel to create several presentation boxes intended as gifts, some of which featured a monogram set with diamonds (see Christie’s, London, 29 November 2016, lot 8).
