A REGENCY GOLD-MOUNTED TORTOISESHELL SNUFF-BOX
LONDON, CIRCA 1830
Oval gold-lined tortoiseshell box, the cover set with an oval gilt-brass plaque depicting the interior of an inn after Teniers, applied chased foliate thumbpiece, the cover later engraved inside with 'Mary' and Royal princess’ crown above, a crest within the motto of the Order of the Bath and E P cypher and beneath with the initials E H P and the date 13 May 1849, the flange with further inscription ‘Presented by H.R.H. the Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester, to General the Honble Sir Edward Paget, G.C.B. as a memento of H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester.’

The initials 'EP' refers to Edward Paget (1775-1849) while 'EHP' refers probably to his son Reverend Edward Heneage Paget (1828–1884). The box was a gift of the duchess of Gloucester to Sir Edward Paget probably for his services as Governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
Edward Paget joined the army as a teenager and by the age of eighteen was a lieutenant colonel. He served in Egypt, Sicily and Sweden before joining the Duke of Wellington's staff in the Spanish Peninsular to fight the French during the Napoleonic wars. He lost his right arm in action but continued to lead troops in Spain until he was captured by the French army in 1812 and held captive for two years. After the Napoleonic wars, Paget was appointed commander-in-chief of the forces in the East Indies, and was posted to India.

Cette boîte est un cadeau présenté au fils de Sir Edward Paget (1775-1849), le révérend Edward Heneage Paget (1828-1884) par la duchesse de Gloucester sans doute en remerciement de ses services militaires mais aussi comme gouverneur du Royal Hospital Chelsea.
Edward Paget (1775-1849) a rejoint l'armée adolescent pour devenir lieutenant-colonel à l'âge de dix-huit ans. Il sert en Égypte, en Sicile et en Suède avant de rejoindre l'état-major du duc de Wellington dans la péninsule ibérique pour combattre les Français pendant les guerres napoléoniennes. Malgré la perte de son bras droit il a continué à commander ses troupes en Espagne jusqu'à sa capture par l'armée française en 1812 qui le retient prisonnier pendant deux ans. Après les guerres napoléoniennes, Paget a été nommé commandant en chef des forces aux Indes orientales et envoyé en Inde.
