A GERMAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER TANKARD

Tapering cylindrical on foot-rim, the body chased with three medallions: one depicting a hare with city behind, in the centre a soldier blowing the horn and on the other side a stag running in front of a village, interspersed with scrolling foliage and fruit trophies on matted ground, the side handle cast as a term, the thumbpiece shaped a bifurcated mermaid, the domed cover with soldier finial holding a shield, marked underneath: town and maker

The design for the scenes featured on this tankard can be attributed to Paul Flindt II (c. 1567-1631), whose published engravings provided silversmiths with numerous patterns for the decoration of silver in the Mannerist style. Flindt was himself a goldsmith as well as an engraver and medallist, and his nearly 200 surviving engravings from 1592-1618 provide a large selection of scenic panels found within strapwork containing grotesques and flowerpots, often featuring animals in landscapes such as here.
Flindt evidently based many of the figures of animals found in his landscapes on earlier published bestiaries, especially Cunrat Gesner's (1516-1565) Historia Animalium printed in Nuremberg in the 1550s.
These designs had an enduring and wide appeal for goldsmiths and via Flindt's published engravings were spread throughout Germany and Europe.

Les scènes d'animaux qui ornent cette chope empruntent aux gravures sur bois de Cunrat Gesner (1516-1565) ainsi qu'aux gravures de Paul Flindt (1567-1631). Gesner publia son bestiaire Historia Animalium imprimé à Nuremberg dans les années 1550 dont Flindt se servira pour ses gravures d'animaux. Flindt était lui-même orfèvre, en plus d'être médailliste et graveur, ce qui explique la nature de ses modèles et son influence sur les orfèvres maniéristes. Il a laissé ainsi plus de 200 gravures publiées entre 1592 et 1618 comprenant des frises d'enroulements et de cuirs qui incorpore grotesques, fleurs et feuillage mais aussi des paysages qui constituaient une inestimable source d'inspiration pour les orfèvres allemands mais aussi européens.
