Le tableau est exécuté sur une toile ayant fait l'objet d'un rentoilage, puis ultérieurement d'un désentoilage. Le tableau semble être sur son châssis d'origine.
À l'œil nu, le tableau a préservé de beaux effets et nuances dans les carnations du modèle ainsi que dans les détails de sa chemise et de son foulard. On constate un réseau de craquelures visibles dans les parties claires de la composition (visage et chemise). On constate une ligne verticale de restauration d'approx. 28 cm partant du cou du modèle vers le bord supérieur. On constate des retouches ayant viré dans les fonds à droite du menton du modèle et dans le coin supérieur droit. Les retouches susmentionnées ne gênent pas la lecture de l'œuvre.
L'examen à l'UV confirme les observations susmentionnées et révèle des retouches ponctuelles supplémentaires dans les fonds et dans la partie droite de la veste du modèle. Des retouches plus importantes sont visibles dans la partie gauche du costume ainsi que sur le visage du modèle, tout particulièrement au niveau de sa tempe gauche.

The painting is executed on a canvas that was relined and subsequently de-lined. The painting appears to be on its original stretcher.
The painting presents well in natural light; it has retained beautiful effects and nuances in the sitter’s flesh tones, as well as in the details of his shirt and scarf. A network of craquelure is visible in the lighter areas of the composition (the face and shirt). A vertical line of restoration, approximately 28 cm in length, runs from the sitter’s neck towards the upper edge. Retouching that has discoloured is visible in the background to the right of the sitter’s chin and in the upper right corner. The aforementioned retouching does not interfere with the overall legibility of the work.
UV examination confirms the above observations and reveals additional localised retouching in the background and in the right-hand part of the sitter’s jacket. More extensive retouching is visible in the left-hand part of the costume and on the sitter’s face, particularly around his left temple.
