Overall in good presentable condition.
CASE: Formerly with rising hood, the present reconstructed hood with later pillars and sides. Lacking spoon catch to case, with remains of spring to the backboard. Two later case brackets. Replaced elements to the outer upper backboard. The sides slightly bowed. The rebuilt plinth largely reveneered and reconstructed. The lower backboard lacking and replaced. The seatboard with spikes, later. Later associated finial. Overall with typical patched repairs and replacements to veneers. Hinges and lock to trunk door later.
DIAL: The silvered chapter ring with mild tarnishing in areas. The hands with some oxidisation are of the correct Knibb type and are later replacements. The spandrels with slight differences to one of the castings. The rear of the dial with various marks including: ‘WM. Jess, Sept 1974 / Tetbury’, ‘Shergold’, ‘Woolland, Epping’, ‘1864’ and ‘1870’.
MOVEMENT: the escape wheel and pinion and pallets are well made replacements. Single footed backcock is a possible replacement (not bushed). The front plate has a plugged hole for a previous and later escape wheel pivot hole. The suspension spring is a replacement. The butterfly regulation and suspension cock is a possible replacement. All of the bolt and shutter maintaining power mechanism is replaced. The bell stand repaired. Crutch and pendulum rod misshapen.
With case key, pendulum, two pulleys (probably replaced), and two substantial brass cased weights marked ‘W’ and ‘S’ to the tops respectively.
Requires a crank winding key.
