The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting has been executed on canvas, which has an old relining. An area of minor paint loss with additional raised paint of circa 1cm is present upper left, and a minor damage to the right-hand sleeve of the youth, with associated losses, is present, which may both benefit from consolidation. A circa 10 cm small scratch to the varnish is present in the top right corner. Historic frame abrasion has presumably caused several additional minor losses along the lower edge. Under ultra-violet light there is evidence of minor strengthening to the grapes and contours of the sitter's face and feather. An old varnish precludes further analysis but the presence of further restoration cannot be precluded. The frame has minor losses to the extremity, and also one 4-inch loss of moulding to the top centre left-hand scroll. There is also one area of lost carving to the central leaf motif.
