Lot Essay

See Michael Archer, Delftware, London, 1997, p. 78, fig. A9 for a smaller example in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Also see Frank Britton, English Delftware in the Bristol Collection, London, 1982, p. 51 for an engraving by Cornelius van Dalen of Charles I entering Edinburgh. Here the author suggests that this print, first published in 1684 and adapted overtime, may be the source for the present composition.
