Lot Essay

John Baring, 2nd Baron Revelstoke served as senior partner of Barings Bank from the 1890s until his death. The eldest son of Edward Baring, 1st Baron Revelstoke, he succeeded to the title and leadership of the firm in 1897.

Beyond his role at Barings, Revelstoke held a number of prominent public and financial appointments. He was a director of the Bank of England from 1898 until his death; served as Minister Plenipotentiary and British financial representative at the Allied Conference in Petrograd in 1917; and acted as a British representative to the Committee of Experts on German Reparations in 1929.
