Lot Essay

Alexander Iozefovich was the owner and editor-in-chief of the newspaper Southern Land (Yuzhny Kray), published in Kharkiv, Ukraine, from 1880 to 1919. Southern Land was a daily newspaper covering social, literary, and political affairs.

The present punch set was presented to Alexander Iozefovich on 1 December 1910 by the Kharkiv paper merchant V. A. Emer to mark the 30th anniversary of Southern Land. Although little is known about Emer, his name appears on a pre-revolutionary advertisement for the Finnish paper company 'Kymmene', indicating that he served as their representative and presumably supplied paper to the newspaper.
