The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
THIS CONDITION REPORT HAS BEEN PREPARED BY HAMISH DEWAR FINE ART CONSERVATION, IN THE CHRISTIE'S WAREHOUSE FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS SALE.
UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE
Structural condition The canvas is unlined and is attached to what is evidently the original keyed wooden stretcher which has one horizontal cross baton. There is an overall pattern of raised lines of drying craquelure as well as stretcher bar lines.
Paint surface The paint surface has a rather glossy varnish layer and the removal of the present varnish and revarnishing would ensure a more sympathetic surface coating and improve the overall appearance. If the drying craquelure was found to be visually distracting lining the canvas could also be considered. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows the varnish layers to be quite opaque, confirming that cleaning would be beneficial. Ultraviolet light also shows just a few small spots of inpainting in the red draperies. It should be stressed that these are of minimal size.
Summary The painting therefore appears to be in essentially good and stable condition and should respond well to the work outlined above, although it should be stressed that no work is required for reasons of conservation.
