Lot Essay

Thomas Chippendale Jr., the eldest son of the renowned cabinetmaker, was baptized in 1749 and grew up immersed in his father’s workshop on St Martin’s Lane. By the early 1770s, he was actively involved in shaping the firm’s mature neoclassical style, collaborating with Thomas Haig. Following his father’s death in 1779, Chippendale Jr. co-managed the business, receiving prestigious commissions for Burton Constable, Harewood House, Paxton House, and Stourhead, where documented furniture still survives. His work extended to clients such as Elizabeth, Countess of Pembroke; Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester; and Sir Rowland Winn at Nostell Priory. Despite his artistic talent and continued patronage, financial difficulties led to two bankruptcies, in 1804 and 1808, forcing the liquidation of his assets. He remained active in the trade until his death in 1823, leaving behind a legacy of refined neoclassical design that upheld his father’s reputation.

The present bergere maintains various 'hallmarks' of the Chippendale firm, including the use of cramp-cuts and batten-carrying holes. The typically outstanding quality of the carving and larger-than-normal scale of the present lot sits closely with Chippendale Junior’s idiom.
