Lot Essay

King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia is recorded as having given vases of this type, featuring his portrait, as diplomatic gifts. Other examples include a garniture with his portrait presented to Graf Karl Friedrich Heinrich von Wylich und Lotum (1767-1841) in 1834 (sold Christie's, Paris, 20 November 2024 and illustrated in Samuel Wittwer, Eva Wollschläger, Refinement & Elegance. Early Nineteenth-Century Royal Porcelain from the Twilight Collection , New York, 2007, pp. 354-357.); and a single vase reputedly gifted to Anatoly Demidov, Prince of San Donato, in 1835 (sold Bonhams, Paris, 16 April 2024, lot 242). The present lot was likely also a royal gift.
