These chairs reflect the elegant French 'Cabriole' chair introduced around 1780, while their spindled balustrades evoke the romance of rural furniture associated with George III's Windsor (see Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co., The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788). Their spindled rods are reed-enriched in harmony with the 'antique' ornament of the back pilasters and arm-supports, which are flowered with Roman acanthus and antique-fluted like the ribbons banding the hollowed seat-rails and pillared legs. Certain features of the chairs can be related to hall chairs made by the St. Martin's Lane firm of Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1979, vol. II, p. 103, fig. 174).

Structurally sound and ready to use. With typical old marks, nicks, small losses and repairs throughout. As stated in the cataloguing, there are variations in the color and carving, with the chair stamped 'RF' being slightly lighter in color and the other apparently with an applied stain throughout. The lighter chair with repairs to its proper left rear leg and stile and the section of the crestrail joining the stile; the screws to the underlying block have subsequently been replaced or repositioned. The darker chair with an old repair to the top of its front proper right leg at the join, visible upon close inspection, but very sturdy. The upholstery with typical minor wear including marks, faint discoloration and overall signs of wear, as to be expected from use. Ready to place.
