THE COLLECTION OF HUNK AND MOO ANDERSON
Collectors and philanthropists Harry 'Hunk' and Mary Margaret 'Moo' Anderson and their daughter, Mary Patricia ‘Putter’ Anderson, together created one of the most celebrated collections of Post-War and contemporary art in America. Inspired by a single visit to the Louvre Museum in the 1960s, their passionate collecting sought out the very best in creative expression, guide by a 'head and hands' approach that gave equal consideration to ingenuity and masterful craftsmanship. They strongly believed that they were merely temporary custodians of a body of work that belonged to the world. To this end, they devoted their efforts to showcasing the collection via private tours of their home, as well as through extraordinary bequests to museums and cultural institutions. They made headlines in 2011, when they donated some 121 masterworks to Stanford University, constituting one of the most significant donations of fine art in American history.

In fall 2018, Christie's, New York presented a landmark sale of more than 200 Post-War and contemporary works from the Anderson Collection, achieving record prices for multiple artists. David Hockney’s Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), painted in 1972 and acquired by the Andersons in 1995, set a new world record for the highest price ever paid at auction ($90,312,500) for a work of art by a living artist.
