Lot Essay

The present lot belonged to one of the most remarkable collections of the 19th century, the Demidoff Collection. Count Anatoli Nikolaevich Demidoff, Prince of San Donato (1812-1870), was a voracious collector passionate of 18th century art. His nephew and heir, Count Paul Demidoff (1839-1885), organized a landmark sale of the contents of their Florentine villa, San Donato, in 1880, where the present lot was sold as lot 463 for 4100, described as a "Belle jardinière b'eu de roi, pâte tendre, avec large médaillon représentant la Leçon de flûte, d’après Boucher, par Chabry, dont elle porte la signature, et bouquet de roses d’or au revers. Lettre M, c’est-à-dire 1765."
Étienne-Jean Chabry is recorded as a figure painter at the Sèvres manufactory from 1764-1787.
