The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is executed on canvas, which has a strict relining and is held under tension. A canvas patch measuring approx 5 x 7 cm has been applied to the reverse, upper right, presumably to repair a small historic tear or damage. A metal baton is applied to each edge of the canvas.
The painting presents well in natural light. Some flattening to the impasto is evident, particularly in the sitter's dress and hair, possibly as a result of the relining. Drying cracks are visible centre left in the dark tones of the background. Along the upper and right edges, minor losses are present, presumably as a result of historic frame abrasion, some of which have been previously retouched. Minor scattered discoloured retouching is faintly visible in the background. Three pinprick accretions are visible above the sitter's shoulder and below her ear. Examination under UV confirms the above, and reveals at least two campaigns of restoration. The most recent largely comprises of infill to the aforementioned drying cracks in the background, lower left and lower right; strengthening in the darker tones of the sitter's dress; an area of retouching upper left of approx 3 x 3 cm that corresponds to the aforementioned canvas patch on the reverse and a horizontal line of retouching upper centre to a stretcher bar mark. An older campaign of minor infill to craquelure in the sitter's arm and chest, and minor retouching in her face is present. Further analysis is precluded by the varnish, but the presence of additional restoration cannot be ruled out. The painting remains stable and can be hung in its present state.
