The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This report was prepared by Hamish Dewar Fine Art Conservation in the Christie's warehouse for the purpose of this sale.
UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE
Structural conditionThe very large canvas is unlined and is securely attached to what is evidently the original keyedwooden stretcher. The canvas is however rather slack with some creasing and would benefitfrom the tightening of the stretcher-keys.Paint surfaceThe paint surface has a reasonably even varnish layer but should benefit from surface cleaning.Inspection under ultraviolet light shows numerous small spots and lines of retouching, which Iam confident are larger than is really necessary and could be reduced with more minimalinpainting should the existing retouchings be removed during the cleaning process.I could see no evidence of any significant repairs under ultraviolet light.SummaryThe painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition and would benefitfrom the tightening of the canvas, cleaning and revarnishing and the removal of the existingretouchings.
