Francis Lascelles was the daughter of Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of Harewood, she married John Douglas, son of James Douglas, 16th Earl of Morton. Cotes executed another portrait of the sitter which was included in the sale of his personal effects after his death conducted by Langford and Son, London 23 February 1771, lot 23, see Mead Johnson, op.cit., p. 158.

The sheet appears to be in good overall condition. On close examination, there are some areas of old restoration in the background, above the sitters cap. Overall the chalk suface is fresh and unrubbed, with some minor areas of losses to the figures chin, right cheek and right shoulder. The work has not been examined outside of the frame in the preparation of this report.
